PERISCOPE

A periscope is a useful example of the law of reflection of light.

In this it is important to place the two mirrors at an angle of 45° because light always reflects away from the mirror at the same angle and surface that it strikes.

In a periscope light from an object strikes the upper mirror at 45° and is reflected at the same angle. This light beam goes straight down the tube and hits the bottom mirror and is reflected back at a 45° angle and sends a beam of light directly into your eye that allows you to see the object.

Periscopes are used in submarines to view objects at sea and also in bunkers to observe objects on the surface from below the surface.
