Windmill

• A windmill is a means of extracting energy from the wind.

• Energy can be obtained from windmills without any pollution.

• The first windmill in Maharashtra was at Pune observatory.

• Asia's largest windmill project is located at Chalkewadi near Satara city in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

• Windmills have been set up on a large scale in Koregaon, Khatav and Man talukas in Satara area as well.

• A machine that converts the kinetic energy of the blowing wind into electrical energy is called a Wind Turbine.

• When the flowing air hits the turbine blades in it, the blades rotate.

• The axis of the turbine is connected to the generator through a speed increasing gear box.

• Rotating blades generate electrical energy by rotating the generator.

• Wind turbines are available from as little as 1 kW to as much as 7 MW (7000 kW).

• Where electricity is to be generated from wind-energy, machines of specific capacity are installed depending on the available wind speed.
