Respiratory system
• The organ system developed for taking in oxygen gas from
the air around
the body and excreting carbon dioxide gas in the air is
called respiratory system.
• The respiratory system includes the respiratory tract
starting from the nose and mouth, the lungs, the rib cage, and the center in
the brain that controls respiration.
• Nose: Breathing and respiratory system starts from the
nose. Air is filtered and inhaled with the help of nasal hairs and sticky
substances.
• Pharynx: Oesophagus and trachea begin from the
pharynx. At the top of the trachea is a
lid. This lid covers the trachea as food passes into the Oesophagus. Therefore,
most of the food particles do not enter the trachea. At other times the trachea
is open. This allows air to pass through the throat into the trachea.
• Trachea: The initial part of the trachea is inflated by
the larynx. The trachea splits into two in the chest. One lobe goes to the
right lung and the other to the left lung.
• Lungs: There is one lung each on the left and right side
of the heart in the chest cavity. Each lung has a double lining. It is called
Pleura. The lungs are like sponges. The lungs are made up of small
compartments. They are called air sacs or alveoli.
