The Heart
Heart is an organ found in all animals with circulatory
system
Normally the human heart beats 72 times per minute
The average weight of the heart is 250-300 grams in females
and 300-350 grams in males.
Right side contains impure blood and left side contains pure
blood. The heart is constantly contracting and expanding.
The heart is located almost in the center of the ribcage.
Our heart is surrounded by a double layer of pericardium.
Between these two layers of the pericardium is a fluid, protecting the heart
from friction and shock.
The human heart is a muscular, fleshy organ. The heart is
made up of cardiac muscle.
Cardiac muscles are involuntary. Their contraction and
relaxation takes place in a fixed rhythm. This is called heartbeat.
The inner vertical membrane of the heart divides it into two
parts, left and right. These parts fall into two compartments. Thus the heart
has four chambers. The upper chambers are called atria and the lower chambers
are called ventricles.
The process of transporting blood through the heart to
various parts of the body and returning it to the heart is called
'circulation'.
The heart alternately contracts and relaxes to keep the
blood circulating.
