India's First-Ever e-Truck Incentive Scheme – A Bold Step Toward Sustainable Freight!
India's First-Ever e-Truck Incentive Scheme – A Bold Step Toward Sustainable Freight!
I welcome the launch of the PM E-DRIVE initiative—a landmark policy move by the Government of India to incentivize electric trucks (e-trucks), under the leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi and Union Minister Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy.
Why this matters for Corporate and ESG Leaders:
-
Diesel trucks contribute to 42% of transport GHG emissions, despite forming only 3% of vehicles.
-
The ₹9.6 lakh per vehicle incentive enables affordable transition to electric freight, critical for carbon-neutral operations.
-
The scrapping requirement ensures we replace aging fleets with green, reliable tech—combining sustainability with safety.
-
Governance mechanisms like mandatory warranties and a first-come-first-served portal ensure transparency and accountability in implementation.
Targeting 5,600 e-trucks—including a dedicated push for 1,100 in Delhi—this scheme is not only a green transport reform, but also a Make in India boost, with Tata, Ashok Leyland, and Volvo Eicher already driving domestic innovation.
As a citizen and corporate members, our role is to align corporate logistics strategies with such national missions. This scheme is a call to:
-
Integrate clean mobility in value chains
-
Report ESG progress more meaningfully
-
Collaborate across sectors—Steel, Cement, Ports, Logistics—for scalable impact
Kudos to SAIL for showing the way with a commitment of 150 e-trucks! It’s time for many more to follow suit.
