Government Initiative for Conservation and Cultivation of Medicinal Plants
Government Initiative for Conservation and Cultivation of Medicinal Plants
Background
India has a rich heritage of medicinal plants, deeply rooted in traditional systems like Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. However, increasing demand, overharvesting, and habitat loss have put many valuable plant species at risk. Recognizing this, the Government of India has taken significant steps to conserve and promote medicinal plant resources.
Introduction
The National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) under the Ministry of Ayush is implementing a comprehensive scheme titled:
👉 “Central Sector Scheme for Conservation, Development and Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants”
This initiative aims to ensure sustainable availability of medicinal plants while also improving the livelihoods of farmers and forest communities.
Objectives of the Initiative
Promote conservation of rare and endangered medicinal plant species
Encourage scientific cultivation and sustainable harvesting
Strengthen supply chains and market access
Support research and innovation in medicinal plant sector
Enhance farmer income and rural livelihoods
Ensure quality planting material and post-harvest management
Key Components of the Scheme
1. Conservation Measures
In-situ conservation (In-situ conservation means protecting and conserving plants or animals in their natural habitat (original place where they grow or live) through Medicinal Plants Conservation and Development Areas (MPCDAs)
Ex-situ conservation via herbal gardens
Resource augmentation in forest and non-forest areas
2. Cultivation & Resource Development
Distribution of quality planting material (QPM)
Expansion of cultivation area (e.g., 12,551 hectares supported in Madhya Pradesh)
