Introduction
India’s livestock sector plays a crucial role in the country’s agricultural economy, supporting millions of farmers and contributing significantly to food security and rural livelihoods. Recognizing the importance of strengthening animal healthcare infrastructure, the Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, has extended financial assistance to Biovet Private Limited, Malur.
The project titled “Development and Commercialization of Veterinary Hormones” aims to establish an indigenous manufacturing facility for critical veterinary reproductive hormones. These include Gonadorelin, Buserelin acetate (GnRH analogues), and Cloprostenol (a prostaglandin analogue)—essential hormones used in livestock reproduction management and treatment of reproductive disorders.
This initiative represents an important step towards self-reliance in veterinary biotechnology, aligning with India’s broader vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Background
India possesses the largest livestock population in the world, including cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, and poultry. The livestock sector contributes significantly to agricultural GDP and provides income security to millions of small and marginal farmers.
However, despite the scale of India’s animal husbandry sector, the country has historically relied heavily on imported veterinary hormones used for reproductive management, breeding programs, and therapeutic interventions.
These hormones play an essential role in:
Artificial insemination programs
Estrus synchronization
Treatment of infertility in livestock
Improving breeding efficiency
Due to the absence of indigenous commercial-scale production, farmers often face high costs and limited availability of these hormones.
To address this gap, the Technology Development Board has supported Biovet Pvt. Ltd., a biotechnology company with expertise in veterinary vaccines and biological products, to establish a dedicated facility for domestic hormone production.
